This year, almost half the world’s population will vote in a national election, with elections taking place in at least 64 countries. In the last fortnight we’ve seen a political shift in both England and France, and we continue to watch the evolving presidential race in America ahead of the November election.
These shifts have the potential to reshape our future. Regulations can be changed to suit new political agendas, the knock-on effect to markets can be volatile, and businesses can be forced to reassess their strategic direction and priorities.
In England, a refocus on environmental measures has been announced with the new Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Steve Reed revealing five core priorities including moving Britian to a zero-waste economy by 2050 and boosting food security. We know that reducing food waste is critical for our plant – according to the United Nations Environmental Programme a third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted.
By innovating, supply-chains around the world can support these commendable goals. De-risking the supply chain not only achieves greater resilience – but can tangibly reduce waste, increase productivity, improve profitability for stakeholders and deliver value to surrounding communities.
